New Quay, Ceredigion

New Quay (y Ceinewydd) is a town and electoral ward on the Cardigan Bay coast in South Ceredigion. The town’s history – and much of its current culture, community life and economic activity – is bound to and by its maritime location. The resident population is around 1,000 and has been reducing. There are strong local communities, including those clustered around the RNLI, harbour, businesses, social groups and events.

The area is rich in natural assets: sandy beaches, cliffs, protected natural spaces and species (including the iconic Bottlenose Dolphins); and the opportunities these bring for outdoor activities, from dolphin-spotting to sandcastle-making to surfing. Other assets are architectural, including a historic pier; and well established local food, retail and hospitality. These are the foundation of a thriving tourism economy; charms which bring challenges too, including employment seasonality, seasonal congestion, a high proportion of holiday homes and lack of affordable local housing.
